Bersatu grassroots want no contest for top three posts: Mukhriz
Bersatu grassroots do not want the three top posts in the party to be contested, according to party deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir.
"Right now the words that we hear coming from division leaders is that they are suggesting that the top three positions, chairperson, president and deputy president, not be contested," he said.
Bersatu grassroots do not want the three top posts in the party to be contested, according to party deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir.
"Right now the words that we hear coming from division leaders is that they are suggesting that the top three positions, chairperson, president and deputy president, not be contested," he said.
The three top posts in the party are currently held by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz himself.
"The suggestions on the ground are discouraging anyone from (running), at least for the chairpersonship. It is a given that we still want him (Mahathir) as our chairperson," he said.
He noted that his father was interested in retaining his position as party chairperson, adding he had not heard of anyone wanting to challenge Mahathir for the post.
As for himself, Mukhriz said he wished to retain his post as deputy president.
He said Bersatu will hold an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on July 20 to ensure that the party polls this year run smoothly.
The party will also discuss if the "one-member one-vote" concept is appropriate for the election of supreme council members.
Currently, the party constitution stipulates that the party's top leadership be elected through the delegate system.
Last week, Mahathir said the party polls should be conducted as soon as possible, given that its current leadership had been appointed instead of voted in.
Mahathir was reported as saying that the amendments were necessary to correct some “shortcomings” and to make the party’s administration run more smoothly.
