Theme for Umno-PAS gathering likely to be more 'inclusive'

Organisers of the Umno-PAS gathering on Sept 14 might adopt a more "inclusive" theme to reflect Malaysia's multiethnic nature after months of divisive politics where the country's minorities frequently came under attack.

According to sources, organisers are considering replacing the current theme, titled "Penyatuan Ummah" (uniting Muslims), with "Penyatuan Nasional" (national unity).

"We want an agenda that is more inclusive and not just focussed on Muslims and Islam," a high-level source told Malaysiakini.

When contacted, Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman confirmed that the theme would be changed.

However, he refused to provide further details and urged the public to wait for the "historic" announcement on September 14.

"We want to save Malaysia, not just Malays but everyone, from Pakatan Harapan.

"We have a wider agenda to create awareness among Malaysians on the need to rise up and unite.

"In other words, the unity of the 'ummah' is not just about the Malays and Muslims. It is for all," he said.

Complaints

On Aug 31, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan had publicly acknowledged that there were complaints about the original theme.

"Some people think that 'ummah' referred only to Muslims when in fact it is the Arabic word for 'masyarakat' (society).

"We acknowledge (this complaint) and might change the theme during phase two (of our campaign)," he said, according to Utusan Malaysia.

Meanwhile, PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad told Malaysiakini that both parties are still finalising the joint charter that will be signed on Sept 14.
