(AFP) Malaysia marked another record-breaking feat when 33 chefs baked what they claimed was the world's largest mooncake weighing a hefty 2,348kg, reports said today.

The giant mooncake, which costs RM56,000, has a circumference of 3.1m and a height of 25.4cm, the Sunday Star said.

It broke last year's local record of a mooncake weighing 1,361 kg and was endorsed by the Malaysia Book of Records.

The chefs from the Six Happiness Group of Restaurants took three days to bake the cake using 588kg of lotus paste, 915kg of red bean paste, 845kg of a mixture of durian and lotus paste, and 250kg of flour.

Executive chairman Tan Tong Heng was quoted as saying the three different pastes represented Malaysia's main ethnic groups - durian for the majority Malays, lotus for Chinese and red bean for Indians.

He said the cake's round shape signified a united Malaysia while the words " Malaysia Boleh " or "Malaysia Can" and the national flag decorated the top of the cake.

The mooncake was cut late yesterday by Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in conjunction with a lantern festival at a popular shopping mall.

It is to be cut up and sold for charity.
