The police have strengthened security at premises utilised by the Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in Kuala Lumpur, according to a Sri Lanka-based daily.

The Daily FT reported that this followed the recent series of arrests on suspects who are allegedly linked to the now-defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Malaysia.

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Foreign Affairs was quoted as saying that the premises where security was heightened by police were the official residence of the High Commissioner and the Chancery premises in Kuala Lumpur.

"The Royal Malaysian Police have alerted the Kuala Lumpur Police to strengthen security at both diplomatic premises in the wake of the recent arrests by Malaysian authorities of close to a dozen individuals who are suspected of having links to the LTTE," the report said.

"The Sri Lankan High Commission is closely monitoring developments and awaiting further information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs of Malaysia," a Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson told the daily.

Earlier this month, Malaysian police's Counter-Terrorism Division (CTD) arrested 12 people whom they claimed are linked to LTTE, including two state assemblypersons from Malacca and Negeri Sembilan.

During the series of operations across several states, which were carried out on Oct 10 and 12, the police also arrested an insurance agent suspected of having a plan to launch attack on Sri Lanka's High Commission premises in the city centre.

Police CTD chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, who announced the arrests, however, did not specify the nature of the attack allegedly being planned by the man and an accomplice.
