We are worried for Harapan, turn off Parliament chambers' air-cond: Umno Youth

Umno Youth has written a letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Mohd Yusoff’s office requesting for the air-conditioning in Parliament chambers to be turned off during proceedings.

“We would like to request the Parliament management team to turn off the air-conditioning during the Dewan Rakyat proceedings.

“This is because we are very sympathetic and sad for the Pakatan Harapan MPs who are cold and cannot attend the Dewan Rakyat proceedings to carry out their duties after having been elected by the rakyat in the 14th general election,” read the letter which was signed by Umno Youth exco Shahrul Nasrun Kamarudin (above).

The letter is dated Nov 28 and bears a stamp from the speaker’s office indicating it has been received.

Yesterday, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Hanipa Maidin had said lawmakers cannot remain in the Parliament's chambers for too long as it was too cold.

This comes after the Supply Bill 2020 for the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry was almost defeated on Tuesday night due to unsatisfactory attendance by Harapan lawmakers.

In Shahrul’s letter, he said the Parliament building could also save on its electricity bill by turning off the air-conditioning.

The savings from the electricity bill could then be used to provide more welfare aid for the rakyat, he added.

“Lastly, we hope that the speaker will approve our request for the sake of the Harapan MPs' health so that they can maintain their position until the 15th general election,” Shahrul said.
