MTUC president shocked by 'hide everything' claim by former sec-gen

Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) president Abdul Halim Mansor said he was shocked by the allegation from his former secretary-general N Gopal Kishnam that he and his current secretary-general J Solomon have been hiding everything from the general council.
"Gopal is the former secretary-general so he knows how MTUC runs the organisation.
"I am a bit shocked as Gopal was a partner to me in all battles in court, we stood together in any battle against MTUC on all issues regarding MTUC (so) how can he claim that I am hiding something from the general council?" Halim (photo) told Malaysiakini today.
He said they have called for a meeting among the working committee on Dec 12 and they have proposed to have a general council meeting on Dec 29 for the delegates' conference.
Earlier today, Gopal had claimed that Halim and Solomon "hide everything" from the general council with regard to a notice of suspension from the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
Halim said he hoped that all MTUC leaders, whether from affiliate unions or the general council, could stand united against the suspension notice.
"Everyone has to be united against the action by the ROS," he said.
Solomon also responded to the claims from Gopal (photo), saying that the current MTUC leadership has nothing to hide and that they are more transparent and honest than the former secretary-general.
Solomon went on to allege that the accounting of the MTUC funds was not completely transparent during his predecessor's era.
"So ask him to shut up, or I will disclose more of his wrongdoings during his tenure as secretary-general," he told Malaysiakini.
Solomon also said they will have a press conference on the ROS matter soon.
The ROS had earlier confirmed that it has suspended the MTUC, following a probe brought on by complaints it received on July 2, alleging poor management of the union umbrella body.
The ROS said on Dec 18 that it had issued a notice giving the MTUC 30 days to explain why it should not be deregistered.
The suspension was to ensure that no other rules were broken by the MTUC pending the explanation.
The Human Resources Ministry has since offered to help resolve the MTUC's suspension.
Halim had thanked the ministry's for its offer, but then said the union never received a call from the Human Resources Minister M Kula Segaran as the offer to help was only made through a press statement.
