Harris J Possible: I offer my condolence to the family of my late friend, MGG Pillai. Genga, as I know him, was a warm friend after I met him in the Balai Berita bookshop at a shopping complex somewhere in Jalan Bukit Bintang in 1982. We were by coincidence browsing the magazine section. He started the conversation and asked me how I was. He stated he knew my dad from his days in Johor Bahru and had met him recently and along the way encouraged me to study in the UK, where I remain today, though I'm still a Malaysian.

I told him I still had the English College School magazine of the late 50s where he had written his first article on the Hindu tradition, during the final years he was there, but alas life has taken its course. What a hilarious comment! Has the old man truly gone senile? Of course, we need permission from another country to build a bridge. Last I know, bridges are built to connect two land masses. Perhaps Mahathir has allocated a page in his great book of Malaysian Records as the only bridge in the world that leads to nowhere.

He is just pretty upset his designated crony has been denied a multi-million ringgit job. Must be disappointing that they had to settle for only RM100 million. I wonder if we can start work on our half of half-baked Malaysia-Sumatra bridge. It is after all, our sovereign right!

Vijay: The appropriateness or otherwise of the Official Secrets Act notwithstanding, I sincerely hope that Matthias Chang is limiting his efforts to supporting Mahathir and is no longer practising law. Should he persist in doing the latter, woe betide his clients if his competency is to be measured by his contention that he has not run foul of the OSA provisions since Singapore has already divulged the information now leaked by him. MDA: Memanglah Petronas untung setiap tahun tetapi keuntungan Petronas itu telah digunakan untuk membayar semua hutang projek mega yang dilaksanakan semasa zaman Dr Mahathir. Saya berpendapat, adalah tidak adil untuk menyalahkan Pak Lah, kerana beliau setakat ini telah sedaya upaya berusaha mengelakkan projek-projek yang membazir dan pada pandangan beliau, akan membebankan generasi akan datang dengan berhutang berbilion ringgit kelak.

On DBSA: No plans yet to demolish temple

TMRamachandran: With reference to the issue of the temple in Section 11 of Shah Alam, it is wrong for the DBSA (Shah Alam City Hall) to even state that the temple is illegal. Can they prove as to what all the illegal activities that have been taking place there? The people of the Hindu community are in fact carrying out activities there in accordance with Article 11 of the Constitution and the first principle of the Rukunegara.

The temple was there even before Malaya got its independence. It was the practise of the then rulers, the British, to allocate land in the estates for places of worship. As such, this temple came into existence. It was only proper for the DBSA, and PKNS when it was formed, to ensure that the temple be recognised and given the proper land title and so on. Moreover, there is law even to protect trees which are more than 100 years old. Why not a building, more so it being a place of worship.

Thai Eng: The 'Pergi Jahanam' MB of Pahang is just too much. Previously it was his dirty hand signal and now this disgraceful cursing. It would have been perfectly fine if he had done it at a meeting of triad bosses or the mafioso but in the Dewan and at journalists who happened to report rightly what he had said.

On When a Bidayuh is not a bumiputera

Disgusted: When is a Bidayuh is not a bumiputera? When he is not a Muslim. Slowly, the agenda has shifted from a bumiputera issue to a Malay issue, and now a Muslim issue. When non-bumis complain, what is the usual response? "Remember May 13, Ketuanan Melayu, and if you don't like it, go somewhere else".

So now when a Bidayuh complains, what are they going to say? Go back to Sarawak? Actually, I don't think they mind. Just also let them keep their oil, gas and timber.

Putra-Nadai-Bumi: While having dinner with some friends - among them a Bidayuh, a Kelabit and a Ceylonese - we discussed the phenomenon where when filling forms in Malaysia, all of them had to choose "lain-lain" for "race/kaum". It is like rubbing salt on wounds for the former two who are supposedly bumiputeras.
