Dr M: I called for Trump's resignation to 'save America'

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said his call for US President Donald Trump to resign was not meant as criticism against the American people but to “save” their country.

He said his words, made during a conference on Saturday, were directed solely at Trump.

“I was not referring to all Americans. I was only referring to President Trump. I find that the American people are very nice people but not President Trump.

“I asked him to resign to save America,” the premier said during a dialogue with French businesses in Cyberjaya today.

Referring to Trump’s current bid to seek re-election, Mahathir had, during his speech at the opening ceremony of the "Third Conference of the League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds” on Feb 8, called on the former to “resign”.

"I wish the Americans would have made a better decision.

"Here is a man who denigrated his role and his policies, trying to use foreign pressure to win elections," he had said.

This was following the Middle East peace plan announced by Trump which has largely been panned by Palestine, Malaysia and other Islamic countries as one-sided.

The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur had expressed disappointment over Mahathir’s remarks, saying they were not in the “spirit of the constructive dialogue” of long-standing US-Malaysia relations.

According to Reuters, Trump’s proposed peace would give Israel most of what it has sought during the seven decades-long conflict with Palestine, including the disputed holy city of Jerusalem and nearly all of the occupied land on which it has built settlements.
