The cabinet today agreed in principle to grant a three-year extension for Lynas to run its rare earths processing plant in Gebeng, Kuantan.
The three-year extension for the plant's operating license will expire in March 2023.
A source familiar with the matter told Malaysiakini the license extension will be officially announced by the minister for energy, science, technology, environment and climate change, Yeo Bee Yin.
Lynas obtained the approval as the Australian mining company was said to have fulfilled all the three conditions set by the government, said another source close to the government.
The source, however, declined to reveal the conditions.
Meanwhile, another source said that DAP ministers Lim Guan Eng and Yeo herself objected to the license renewal when the issue brought up in the cabinet today.
On Aug 15 last year, the cabinet granted Lynas only a six-month license which took effect on Sept 3, 2019, and is to expire on March 2, 2020.
Back then, the renewal came with several major conditions including transferring the plant's cracking and leaching process to another country plus the construction of a permanent disposal facility (PDF)
On the latter, Lynas recently announced that it obtained the Pahang state government's approval to use a site at Bukit Ketam near Kuantan for the construction of a PDF for its water leach purification (WLP) residue.
