DAP candidate for the Batu Lintang constituency Voon Lee Shan today filed a police report against his Barisan Nasional (BN) opponent and Kuching City South Mayor Chan Seng Khai.

Voon said the mayor had allegedly breached his oath of office by campaigning during work hours and wasting taxpayers money.

"If he wanted to campaign during office hours, he should apply for leave as he has been appointed to the mayor's position not by the Sarawak People's Party (SUPP) but by the (state) government.

Voon ( second from right ), a retired police officer turned lawyer, said an acting mayor be appointed instead.

The Sarawak elections will commence on May 20.

No salary

Meanwhile, Chan was quoted by two local Chinese dailies as saying that he was appointed to the mayor's position by his party and that he was not paid a salary but only allowance.

Responding, Voon asked if the Kuching City South Council was a political organisation?

The DAP candidate said the mayor should be sacked for campaigning during office hours.

Voon lodged the report with the central police station in Kuching. He was accompanied by DAP candidate for Pending Violet Yong Wui Wui and other party officials.

When met, Voon said the battle for Batu Lintang - a Chinese majority seat - would be tough.

The politician added that he is asking voters to make a choice between having a people's representative or a government's representative.

In another development, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser and former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim has hit the campaign trail.

He went on a 'walk-about' with the party's candidate for Padungan Dominique Ng. The duo shook hands with shopkeepers and traders along Jalan Padungan

Anwar will address a large fund-raising dinner in support of Ng this evening. Some 2,000 people are expected to attend.
