The police will respect the rights to expression and assembly as long as it is within the law, said Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador.

At a press conference this morning, Hamid said protest organisers only need to notify the police and stay out of non-designated protest zones.

"If we are not notified, how can the police prepare to control safety and traffic to ensure that the public are not inconvenienced?

"Why do you want to behave like you can do anything you like? We have rules and the rules are not oppressive.

"Previously, (the notice period) was two weeks. Now it's (seven) days," he said.

On freedom of expression, Hamid said Malaysians must use this freedom wisely and not instigate others to commit violence or sedition.

"There's a difference. If they are polite and within the context of the law, go ahead. They are free to do so.

"If you are threatening others, inciting others or using foul language, then action has to be taken.

"Just appreciate the freedom that you have right now... Let's look out for each other," he said.

Several small protests have been held in Kuala Lumpur during the eight-day political crisis last week.

Protesters are calling for fresh elections on grounds that Muhyiddin Yassin was forming a government with parties that lost during the election.

Several activists have been probed for either calling for the rally or participating in it.
