CORONAVIRUS | Sarawak police chief Aidi Ismail has tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.

Adi told Malaysiakini that he went to the Sarawak General Hospital (HUS) yesterday afternoon after developing a sore throat.

The hospital rang him last night to inform him that he needed to be hospitalised for treatment.

"I went back to HUS last night and have since been admitted," he added.

Aidi said, his wife and officers who worked closely with him at the Sarawak police contingent headquarters, including those in his office, have been ordered to self-quarantine pending results from their Covid-19 tests.

Asked where he thought he could have caught the virus, the officer said he had attended state-level meetings, including Sarawak Disaster Management Committee meetings on Covid-19, where several of the attendees were later confirmed positive.

Aidi said he had taken all precautions needed when going around carrying out his duties as the state's top cop.

However, he said the infection will nor prevent him from continuing to serve the country as Aidi he would continue to play his role from his isolation ward.

Sarawak is one of the states that has been seeing a huge number of Covid-19 positive cases with two of the country's four major clusters in the state.

While Deputy Chief Minister Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and state Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Fatimah Abdullah also reportedly had to go on self-quarantine after having close contact with people who were later tested positive.
