The Malacca Historic City Council has been busy spring cleaning urban areas of posters pasted by opposition parties, leaving Parti Keadilan Rakyat fuming.

Roughly 5,000 posters advertising this afternoon's event 'High Tea with Anwar Ibrahim' have been distributed and portion of it pasted in the urban areas of Bukit Baru, Melaka Baru, Ayer Molek and Bukit Beruang.

But according to PKR deputy youth chief Syamsul Iskandar, a team led by city council official Hairiz Nordin was seen tearing them down since yesterday morning.

"We confronted him, but he said he was merely exercising orders given from his superiors. We suspected that orders must have come from the mayor himself," said Syamsul when contacted.

Double standards

But when Syamsul and his entourage arrived at City Hall, not only were they allegedly given the runaround, they were made to wait two hours before they were told that no one was available to entertain their complaint.

Syamsul claims that such an incident had never happened before and that the city council seems to be far more tolerant of the numerous Barisan Nasional posters and banners all over the area.

"If it is strictly a permit issue, then a lot of Barisan Nasional posters would have been taken down. Why the double standards?" he added.

On today's event, Syamsul said that the PKR is targetting 1,000 people for the 90-minute high tea-cum-ceramah at 'Warung Reformasi' in Jalan Tiang Dua, Ayer Molek.
