Parliamentarians from the Barisan Nasional (BN) and opposition must take an united stand to support the implementation of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), said opposition leader Lim Kit Siang.

In a statement over the weekend, he said the MPs must voice their support when Parliament reconvenes on June 24 for Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to implement the IPCMC.

He also called on MPs to censure Inspector-General of Police Mohd Bakri Omar for openly disagreeing with the IPCMC and the police's online 'revolt' against it.

Malaysiakini had recently exposed 'threats' made by police personnel against the IPCMC in an internal bulletin which was inadvertently posted on the police's official website.

Among the threats were to vote for the opposition and to allow the crime rate to soar.

Meanwhile, Lim said it is an open secret that the prime minister was not only facing objections from the police but also certain ministers and Umno Mps.

"It would be the height of ridicule if the prime minister continues to get stronger support from DAP Mps than from BN Mps for the establishment of the IPCMC," he added.

Why so long?

Lim also questioned why Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail was taking such a long time to finalise the legislative proposals to be presented to Parliament on the formation of the IPCMC.

"The AG risks parliamentary censure if he continues to procrastinate and sit on the assignment to formulate the necessary legislation," he said.

"Abdul Gani should banish from his mind any notion to propose the abandonment of the Royal Police Commission's recommendation on the IPCMC," he added.

According to him, if the AG rejected the proposal, he would:

- be making a mockery of the work done by the royal commission

- it would constitute an open opposition to the prime minister's pledge to implement the IPCMC

- and plunge the AG's office into its worst public confidence crisis in the nation's history.

Lim also welcomed the stand of the three BN component parties' youth wings - MCA, MIC and Gerakan - to support the IPCMC.

"Time is long past however for MCA Youth, MIC Youth and Gerakan Youth just to give verbal support, after they had allowed Umno Youth all this while to be the de facto spokesperson for all BN youth wings in opposing the IPCMC," he said.
