Kuala Lumpur City Hall will review development projects at Bukit Mas in Hulu Kelang before granting approval to the developers to carry out construction work on the hillslopes.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Ruslin Hasan said the move was to ensure the projects would not endanger the safety of residents occupying 224 houses and apartments in the area.

"We're reviewing applications for development projects in the area. We've not allowed them to start construction work although approval for planning was given in 1990," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Earlier, Ruslin visited the project sites on the hillslopes of Bukit Mas, not far from Kampung Pasir, the site of last Wednesday's massive landslide which claimed four lives.

Accompanied by several City Hall officers, Ruslin spent about an hour inspecting the site.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi instructed Ruslin to visit the sites following complaints from residents.

Comprehensive report

Ruslin said a comprehensive report would be forwarded to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who has taken over the duties of Federal Territories Minister Datuk Zulhasnan Rafique, who is overseas, before submitting to the prime minister.

"Shahrizat will bring up the matter to the Cabinet on Wednesday," he said.

On hillslope development projects, Ruslin said all projects must conform to the environmental impact assessment (EIA) studies before they could be approved.

He said the government had made it mandatory for housing developers to prepare and comply with the EIA report following the Highland Towers tragedy in 1990.

On complaints by residents that development being carried out in the area could cause cracks to their homes, Ruslin said City Hall would ensure developers abide by the regulations.
