Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) is set to host a series of seminars from next month, based on the theme 'A harmonious society begins from moral and character cultivation'.

At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur this morning, education bureau chief Ng Lip Yong cited a moral reason for organising the event.

"Society is becoming more materialistic. We are organising this to impart knowledge and teach the public how to be good, kind and filial," he said.

"We will teach Confucian philosophy. There is a lot to learn from Confucius and his disciples."

The seminars will be held over four sessions with two presentations in each. Speakers will comprise individuals and academicians who have studied the teachings of Confucius.

Ng said the seminars will be conducted in Mandarin because Confucianism is primarily a Chinese-centric teaching.

"In future we hope to conduct such sessions in other languages to spread the teachings," he added.

Youths are the main target group, in the expectation that they will see Confucianism philosophy as an option to religion and school-based moral education.

The seminars, to be held up to November, will be co-organised by Pemuda Gerakan and Wanita Gerakan.
