CORONAVIRUS | Congregational and Friday prayers will only be allowed for Malaysians, said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said this when asked whether the leeway for the prayers would involve foreigners.
"When we made the announcement yesterday, it did not involve foreigners.
"For congregational and Friday prayers, only locals are allowed," Ismail said in his daily media conference in Putrajaya today.
He cited the high number of Covid-19 cases among foreigners as the reason for the exclusion, as well as putting the locals as the priority for the leeway.
Yesterday, there was a meeting on the standard operating procedures for mosques in the federal territories, which is pending consent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Previously, both prayers were only limited to 30 people but Ismail had said that the meeting, joined by the religious affairs minister, had agreed in principle that the number should be based on the size of the particular mosque.
As for marriage registration for non-Muslims, Ismail said the government has approved 171 houses of worship to register for marriages.
"They (the couples) are not allowed to perform the activity at a house of worship outside of the list," he said.
Previously, Ismail had announced that only a group of four people consisting of the bride, bridegroom, and two witnesses are allowed for interstate travel to register for marriage.
Meanwhile, the National Security Council has allowed neighbourhood watch to resume operations at 7,000 green zone locations starting June 20.
Each patrolling team would not exceed five people, he said.
