Malaysian authorities are keeping a close eye on reality television shows and may ban those deemed to have a negative effect on young viewers, a report said today.

Deputy Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Wong Kam Hong said the government would investigate the content of local and foreign shows to make sure they do not run counter to Malaysian culture.

"It is undeniable that some reality shows are probaby unsuitable for Malaysian culture, tradition, customs and religion, and can influence and poison the minds of youths," Wong was quoted by the Star daily as saying.

Set of guidelines

The government has already produced a set of guidelines for shows based on cultural aspects including politeness, moral values, and dance and musical content, he said.

Foreign reality shows which air regularly on local television stations are popular amongst Malaysian viewers and include American Idol, The Apprentice, Survivor, The Amazing Race, America's Next Top Model and Manhunt.

Malaysia also has its own stable of reality shows, with talent quests and dating programs luring viewers and drawing large followings.
