Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy secretary-general Zahir Hassan said he is seriously considering filing a civil suit against the police for injuries sustained on Bloody Sunday .

Although he had taken his complaint to the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam), it will allow the police to investigate the case before it decides whether or not to hold a public inquiry into the incident.

Zahir, a member of the organising committee of the protest held outside the KLCC on May 28, alleged he had been kicked in the jaw by Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel.

The street demonstration was held against the government's recent decisions to increase fuel prices and the electricity tariff. However, police broke up the protest, allegedly injuring a few protestors in the process.

"The evidence is clear. There is no reason to delay a public inquiry," Zahir told reporters today at the Dang Wangi district police station.

Awaiting medical report

He said he is waiting for the medical report to be issued by the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, expected in about a month.

Earlier this month, non-governmental organisations had urged Suhakam to conduct a public inquiry into allegations of police brutality against the protesters.

Zahir was among 20 protestors who were detained during the street demonstration.

Today, 13 of them were at the police station to find out whether they would be charged, but the decision was postponed to Aug 9. All remain on police bail.

Also present was PAS Youth chief, Salahuddin Ayub ( photo ), who informed reporters of the postponement.
