The government has lifted the 250-person limit previously imposed on official, religious and social events.
From July 15, there will no longer be a hard limit but organisers will be required to adjust the maximum number of guests based on the size of the premises, on condition that the one-metre social distancing rule is observed.
This was announced by Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today following a National Security Council meeting among cabinet ministers.
The change, he said, was to standardise the rules between mosques, non-Muslim places of worship and events like wedding receptions.
“Mosques will no longer need to limit their space use to one-third of its premises. As long as there is social distancing, there is no limit on the number of people but this will be based on the size of the mosque.
“The same goes for wedding receptions at hotels. If the ballroom has a 1,000-person capacity but with social distancing, it can now fit 800 people, it will be allowed to host 800 people,” he explained.
“The total number of people allowed will be based on the size of the premises with the one-metre social distancing rule in place. We will not be limiting events based on the number of people (per se),” he reiterated.
