MOE urged to explain whereabouts of RM1.2m for missionary schools

The Federation of Christian Mission Schools Malaysia (FCMSM) has made a query on the whereabouts of the RM1.2 million allocation said to have been channelled to the missionary schools.

This came after Deputy Education Minister Dr Mah Hang Soon was reportedly saying earlier this week that a total RM1.2 million out of RM50 million allocated under 2020 Budget had been allocated for the missionary schools as of Feb 14.

FCMSM committee member Khor Yong Yin pointed out that all the 438 government-aided missionary schools said they haven't received any allocation nor being approached by any contractor for maintenance works.

Khor said he met Mah in April to discuss the budget allocation for missionary schools but the latter made no mention about part of the money being channelled to the government-aided schools.

As such, he expressed his surprise when Mah showed a black and white to substantiate proof that the money had been channelled to the schools.

Khor said FCMSM submitted a list on how the RM50 million were distributed to the needy schools.

"He accepted our proposal on the RM50 million but he did not mention that the ministry had allocated part of the fund," he was quoted saying by Sin Chew Daily.

He hopes the allocation will be used on the government-aided schools instead of the government schools.

"We were seeing a total of RM1.2 million out of RM50 million issued but we were not notified which schools received the money and we don't know the relevant process," he said.

He added that the government should directly channel the money into the bank account of the schools’ board instead of sending the money to the state education department.

The government had handed out RM100 million annually from 2009 until 2016 for the ministry but for the last three years, it has given only RM50 million annually.
