Ramkarpal provides Hansard, video of father playing recording in Dewan Rakyat
Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh has produced evidence in the form of a Hansard excerpt, and a Youtube video, proving that his late-father Karpal Singh had once played an audio recording in the Dewan Rakyat.
This is after the government said it could not find such evidence, and warned the DAP lawmaker could be disciplined for misleading the House if he did not produce evidence...
Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh has produced evidence in the form of a Hansard excerpt, and a Youtube video, proving that his late father Karpal Singh had once played an audio recording in the Dewan Rakyat.
This came after the government said it could not find such evidence, and warned the DAP lawmaker could be disciplined for misleading the House if he did not prove the claim.
It should be noted that de facto Law and Parliament Minister Takiyuddin Hassan (above, left) had based the statement on Ramkarpal's quote that he believed the incident occurred in 2007, whereas the Hansard and video are from the sitting held on Feb 25, 2009.
"If I say 'if I am not mistaken' (it means) I am not sure... And where is the element of misleading?" Ramkarpal said at a press conference in the Parliament lobby today.
"I am putting the record straight. I will not come to the House to mislead. I urge the minister to check the records before making reckless statements, do your homework," he added.
Yesterday, the Bukit Gelugor MP had tried to play a recording allegedly of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin saying Umno MPs can be enticed to join Bersatu if they are offered ministerships or posts in government-linked companies (GLCs).
Shortly after he hit play, he was stopped by Deputy Speaker Azalina Othman Said.
In defending his move, Ramkarpal stated that there was precedent for playing audio recordings in the Dewan Rakyat, saying Karpal had in 2007 played a recording of former chief judge Zaki Azmi in the House.
He was referring to a recording of Zaki allegedly saying that he had to pay bribes when he was a practising lawyer to get things done.
Karpal had raised the matter in the Dewan Rakyat on Feb 25, 2009, in asking why no action had been taken against the former chief justice.
Takiyuddin earlier said a check of Parliament records did not show any evidence that this occurred.
He gave the Bukit Gelugor MP until the end of today's Parliament session to provide evidence.
Ramkarpal said he would not be meeting with Takiyuddin, and considered the matter resolved.
Soon after Ramkarpal's press conference, Arau MP Shahidan Kassim also held a presser regarding the matter.
The BN lawmaker initially appeared at a loss when the media showed him Ramkarpal's statement and the Hansard copy.
However, he persisted and said he would call on the government to refer the Bukit Gelugor MP to the rights and privileges committee for misleading the Dewan Rakyat.
"This is because he did not speak the truth about the incident in 2007. If he had corrected it later, the minister will look at it.
"I just want to see whether in 2007 there was an audio (being played) or not," Shahidan (above) said.
Earlier in the day, Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun said that Azalina had likely not allowed an audio recording to be played in the Dewan Rakyat, based on the standing order that matters from news reports and the media can't be used in the House.
