PARLIAMENT | The "Love My Palm Oil" campaign has been rebranded to "Sawit Anugerah Tuhan" (Palm Oil is God's Gift) by the Plantations and Commodities Ministry.

Minister Khairuddin Aman Razali said the new tagline could pushback anti-palm oil rhetoric from European lobbyists.

"Regarding the Love My Palm Oil campaign, I have moved to change the campaign to something better, God willing, the name is 'Sawit Anugerah Tuhan'.

"That is my approach in my time as minister," he told the Dewan Rakyat today.

He this in response to a query by former deputy minister Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin (Harapan-Hang Tuah Jaya)

Checks by Malaysiakini found that Khairuddin had used the new tagline as early as June 20, but its use then appeared to be limited to hashtags on several social media postings.

The Love My Palm Oil campaign was launched by former plantations and commodities minister Teresa Kok in January 2019 in an effort to encourage domestic use of palm oil.

Khairuddin (below) later elaborated that the new campaign could be an additional narrative to promote palm oil besides promoting its sustainability.

"Which is why we have a second narrative, that is this is God's gift, the best foodstuff for the world.

"Hence, when we talk about its benefits, then the demands of the European lobbyists who want to increase their exports of soya oil and such will be pushed back," he said.

He added the country already had the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification which was compulsory for all growers and which addresses the issue of sustainability.
