For the last seven days, peaceful protests have been held in Batu Pahat, Johor, against conflicts around the Middle East.

Syed Hamid Ali, executive director of Insani based in Batu Pahat, Johor, said his group has been passing out leaflets aimed at educating the public about the atrocities of war.

He said many have gathered peacefully at the Batu Pahat monument between 6pm and 6.30pm, as well as in surrounding spots.

Thousands have shown support by honking car-horns and giving a thumbs-up as they drive past, he said when contacted.

"As long as the police don't interfere with the protests, we will continue. They have advised us to stop right from the very first day, but we will stop only when the radio and TV stops broadcasting such news," he said.

"What we do transcends religion. We just want people to show their support against the war on aggression."

Vigil tonight

Global NGO Amnesty International, will hold a global vigil for victims and survivors of Israeli/Lebanon conflict at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur tonight. It expects about 100 people to attend.

"We are mobilising our global membership and supporters worldwide to call for a ceasefire," said campaigns co-ordinator K Shan in a press statement.

He urged those who are not in the Klang Valley to organise vigils in their area or light a candle outside their house.

"We, the people, are not powerless in the face of this crisis. We must stand up together to protect the lives of civilians and to ensure no more war crimes are committed," he added.
