Minggu Mang Madang, 42, officially declared dead in 2002, has still not received his MyKad despite being promised one by the National Registration Department (NRD) after his status had been officially re-instated.

"I am deeply troubled at the delay (in the issuance of the document). The whole thing has adversely affected my life and that of my family members for several years and I want to get back my life as soon as possible," Minggu said at the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) service centre of state assemblyperson Dominique Ng in Padungan this morning.

He said inspite of the assurances and promises, he was still unable to forget the nightmarish experience of being declared officially dead - a four-year period which had caused him tremendous difficulties.

Once a thriving general contractor, Minggu discovered to his horror that 'he' had been reported to police in Bintulu as having been killed in an accident by a person working in a logging company in Bintulu and later officially declared dead by the NRD in January 2002.

He also managed to otain a copy of his death certificate from the NRD.

Minggu said he only found out about it when he went to the Transport Department to renew his driving licence almost a year later but had been refused renewal on the ground he was already dead. [ Photo: Minggu, (left), showing his old IC, with Ng ]

Thereafter, he went through various official channels and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to rectify the matter, and eventually proved that he was still very much alive.

Minggu told malaysiakini that he had no known enemies or rivals who would want to do such a thing to him.

Early last month, following a thorough investigation, the NRD promised to issue him his MyKad within two weeks.

"But up to now I have not received by MyKad nor has the NRD bothered to issue as requested by me a letter to confirm the revocaton of the the death status, let alone to inform the media about it for the benefit of the general public," he added.

Wants to see NRD director

Minggu said he had approached an officer of the department who told him the fastest they could issue the MyKad to him was two months.

"I also asked the NRD for a letter to confirm the revocation of the death certificate and up to now I have not received any reply," a distraught Minggu said, adding that without such a document he had not been able to renew his trading licences, among other things.

The case was given extensive media coverage last month.

He said the only thing the officer told him was that his name has been deleted from the department's record on deceased persons.

He also said he was unable to meet the state NRD director Abu Bakar Mat to seek his help although he had made several attempts to see him.

Ng who was present at the press conference said he would try and contact the director on his return from Peninsular Malaysia next week to pursue the matter.

Minggu said he was mulling legal action against various parties who had put his life in misery and difficulty as a result of the false report concerning his purported death from an accident.

He expressed the hope the police would get to the bottom of the matter and find out who were responsible and take the necessary action against them.

Meanwhile, the PKR state assemblyperson today officially launched his own PKR webpage which contains several main pages initially, including a forum for readers on freedom of speech.

Ng said the party's important speeches, statements and announcements would be included in the webpage launched this morning at the service centre in Jalan Ban Hock in Kuching.
