Malaysia will spend RM135 million (US$38 million) upgrading airport infrastructure to take in the world's biggest passenger jet, the Airbus A380 superjumbo, a report said today.

"All works are expected to be completed by May next year," Azmi Murad, general manager of Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd, was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times newspaper.

Azmi said the work included additional aerobridges and enhancing the mezzanine lounges for upper deck passengers of the A380 at the departure halls of Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Delay in delivery

Airbus told clients in June that delivery of the A380, which is designed to carry 555-840 passengers, would be delayed by an additional six to seven months because of production problems.

In response, Malaysia Airlines said it was reviewing the terms of its purchase agreement for six A380s, of which three were to have been delivered originally in 2007.

Last November, the plane successfully toured the region - Singapore, Australia and Malaysia - to visit launch customers Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Malaysia Airlines.
