Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's wife Rosmah Mansor will be proclaimed chancellor of Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel) on Monday.

Invitations to the proclamation ceremony at the state-funded university has been distributed to all Selangor state exco members and assemblypersons.

Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo will also be present at the ceremony which will be held at Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel on Aug 21.

However, Selangor DAP state assemblyperson Teng Chang Khim has raised several questions pertaining to Rosmah's honorary post in his blog .

"Why Rosmah? Is it because she is the wife of the next prime minister of Malaysia?" he asked.

"How would Rosmah's appointment enhance the quality and image of tertiary education in Malaysia?" said Teng, who is the representative for the Selangor state seat of Sungai Pinang.

Teng said he was told that Selangor state exco members were in the dark over Rosmah's appointment until they received the invitation.

He wondered whether Khir had approved the appointment without informing the exco.

Mohd Khir is chairperson of Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Selangor (KDEB), the state investment arm which owns Unisel.

Royal appointment?

Contacted today, Teng speculated that a possible explanation was that the appointment could come from the sultan of Selangor himself.

"If the appointment was proposed by the Sultan (Sharafuddin Idris Shah), then it would bypass the executive committee," he said.

"The question remains - what has Rosmah done or contributed to deserve the chancellorship, even if it is a honorary title?" he added.

According to a government website , the deputy premier's wife obtained a Masters degree in Sociology and Agriculture from the Louisiana State University in 1978.

She had earlier obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology from Universiti Malaya.

Rosmah served as an executive in Bank Pertanian in 1975 and as a business development manager for property developer Island and Peninsular Bhd from 1983 to 1987.

She is currently the patron of numerous humanitarian societies.
