Sarawak Bersatu chief Jaziri Alkaf Abdillah Suffian and Bukit Katil MCA division chief Koh Nai Kwong were sworn-in as members of the Dewan Negara today.
The duo was appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who can appoint up to 44 senators. There are six vacancies left.
Jaziri, 42, was previously an architect before founding MyProdigy Global, which has developed an online self-help tool called Pathway Minded.
He is also the Santubong Bersatu division chief.
Koh, 59, was once the Alor Gajah MP. He was fielded as MCA's candidate for the Machap Jaya State Assembly seat in the 2018 general election but he did not win.
Koh is understood to be a close confidante of Malacca governor Mohd Ali Rustam.
Dewan Negara persident Rais Yatim in his welcoming speech, urged Koh and Jaziri to draw upon their respective experience and professions to contribute during Senate sessions encompassing all aspects in line with the position of Dewan Negara as the highest legislature in the country.
“To all Honourable Members, discharge your responsibilities as members of the Senate to your level best.
“The lines of thought presented must be thoroughly, authoritative and intellectual to represent the voices of the people including the state and minority groups such Orang Asli or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) without leaving anyone out, " he said, according to Bernama.
With the latest round of appointments, the BN-Perikatan Nasional-Gabungan Parti Sarawak alliance has 45 seats in the 70-seat Dewan Negara while the opposition has 22 seats.
There are eight vacancies in total.
