A former Mara Incorporated chairperson was arrested by the MACC today in relation to allegedly receiving RM33.45 million in kickbacks from property transactions in Australia.
MACC chief Azam Baki, when contacted, confirmed that the suspect was arrested after presenting himself at the agency's headquarters in Putrajaya.
Azam said the suspect will face 22 graft charges relating to Mara Inc's purchase of Dudley International House in Australia.
The alleged corruption came to light after Melbourne-based The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald obtained a leaked draft report prepared by Ernst and Young for the Malaysian government.
The 2019 report identified three central figures in the dubious transactions.
The MACC commenced investigation last year following the revelation in the Australian press.
The former Mara Inc chairperson will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court this Friday.
The 22 charges are under Section 16(a) and Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
Section 16(a) concerns the offence of corruptly soliciting, receiving or agreeing to receive gratification as inducement for certain deeds while Section 17(a) concerns the offence of gratification as an agent.
Both sections under the MACC Act provide punishment of up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times of the gratification sum.
