Malaysian Muslim Youth Movement (Abim) members should disassociate themselves from the Abim activity in Keadilan, said the NGO's president Ahmad Azam Abdul Rahman.

He said Abim members should be able to differentiate their involvement in Abim as a non-governmental organisation from their activities in Keadilan as a political party. This is necessary to safeguard Abim's non-partisan stance.

"I think this would be the best solution at the moment in order to avoid further 'Abim-Keadilan confrontation' over matters in the party.

"And from now on, the Keadilan leadership should regard problems involving party members who are also Abim members as party problems, and deal with it according to party constitution," he told malaysiakini today.

As such, he said, the Abim members in Keadilan should no longer be categorised into the "Abim faction" or "non-Abim faction".

"If they want to give a name to their factions, they should do so by using some other names," he added.

He said the so-called "Abim faction" referred to in Keadilan recently is comprised of former Umno members as well as members of other NGOs in the party.

"I hope this move would put an end to the unpleasant experience between Abim and Keadilan once and for all," he said.

On another issue, Azam clarified a recent report in malaysiakini which quoted him as saying that "Abim was wary of PRM's history as a socialist party"and that "Keadilan had started off with a clean slate and should not let the 'red' history of PRM be a burden".

"What I meant was Abim members in Keadilan were wary of PRM's history as a socialist party. My statement referred to the feelings of Abim members in Keadilan as told to me. It does not represent the views of Abim," he said.
