Covid-19: Minister wants strategy similar to Battle of Stalingrad's Pyrrhic victory
Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan has called on Malaysia to develop a strategy that evokes how the Soviet Union defeated Axis forces in the Battle of Stalingrad.
The battle, one of the bloodiest in World War 2, resulted in over 1.1 million Soviet deaths, compared to an estimated 800,000 casualties of the invading Axis forces.
The battle also saw the Soviets saving food supplies, instead of their own people.

"Forget our differences, work on unity, develop strength for the people and nation," he tweeted last night.
In the Battle of Stalingrad, the Soviets knew in advance that Axis forces were heading towards them, allowing them to ship grain, cattle, and railway cars out of harm's way.
However, Stalin refused to evacuate Stalingrad's 400,000 civilians. The result was food shortages in the city, even before the battle began.
The battle which turned into a siege, lasted over five months, with fighting degenerating into close-quarters combat from house to house.
By the end of the battle, an estimated 40,000 civilians had died.
Covid-19 cases have been climbing in the last two weeks, with daily cases exceeding the 10,000 mark for the third day in a row yesterday.
The death toll currently stands at 6,613. Triple-digit fatalities reported daily are becoming a regular occurrence.
A prolonged lockdown has also affected many economically, with people struggling to put food on the table, resulting in community-driven campaigns to help each other out where government aid was lacking.
What, to let 1.1 million Malaysia die in order to save the balance of the population ? Is that what you said Mr Law Minister or otherwise known as RM 20 minister.

This Taki is spewing nonsense again. Incoherent. Cannot differentiate between physical and invisible enemy. When what you can see, you can defeat. When what you cannot see, it's near impossible to defeat. What he said about the defense of Stalingrad and Covid19 are two very different type of warfare. No wonder PN Govt cannot fight Covid19 with Minister like Taki who doesn't know anything about strategy warfare. In the defense of Stalingrad, there was loyalty, professionalism, scarifices, heroism and call beyond of duty. There is one single objective that was to defeat the Nazi. However in the defense of Covid19, PN Govt spent more time and resources fighting politics among themselves, self interest, no expertise in crisis management, no loyalty, no sacrifices, no clue and useless leaders. So where is the similarities? Rakyat has already sacrificing himself by displaying white flags and go around begging. Has any PN Govt cabinet ministers done the same thing? NONE. Some cabinet ministers even have the cheek to go overseas leaving the Rakyat to care for themselves while they relax and enjoy some fresh air. Why don't Taki start a fundraising campaign among all the cabinet ministers and CEO of all GLCs to help the poor and sufferings in their daily food needs? Sacrifice by leaders is a hallmark of humility in time of crisis. Taki shouldn't talk about the subject of Stalingrad when he knows nuts of the history of Stalingrad. Perhaps a better story is about the sacrifice of Malaysians in defending against the Japanese during WW2. This story is more close to the hearts of our Malaysians who had fought a heroic battle at that time. Taki will be first to cabut if ever Malaysia has a war.
