Government chief whip Ismail Sabri Yaakob has assured that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government still has the support of most MPs, amid fresh doubts on Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s hold on power.

The deputy prime minister said the government still has the support of more than 110 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat.

“The political situation in the country today is unstable and could hamper efforts to resolve economic problems and fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I wish to emphasise that the government still has the support of more than 110 MPs who are still with the government today.

“Therefore, I hope the people remain calm in the face of the current situation and we pray together that this political crisis will end soon,” Ismail Sabri said in a statement.

There are 220 members in the Dewan Rakyat.

Ismail Sabri did not mention who among them are still backing the prime minister.

In an immediate response, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim challenged PN to put its legitimacy to the test in the Dewan Rakyat.

“Ismail Sabri knows the law. He should test it in the Dewan Rakyat. Why be afraid of a test in the House?

“He is a minister. He is a son of Pahang. Does he understand derhaka (treason)? Does he understand royal decrees? Does he understand the role of Parliament?

“I wish to advise people like this who are stubborn and insist on treason on clear-cut matters: Read the law, respect the Constitution, and respect the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby.

Meanwhile, PAS voiced its support for Muhyiddin.

“PAS stands firm with the prime minister in upholding all decisions made by the cabinet.

“PAS urges all parties to remain united and set politics aside in managing the country under the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Political stability and unity among the people are very much needed in facing the pandemic threat,” said PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man in a statement.

Muhyiddin’s party Bersatu also voiced its continued support for its president to remain as prime minister.

The party’s deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu said all of Bersatu's MPs have given their undivided support for Muhyiddin.

“Bersatu thanks the Agong’s decree and urges all MPs to prioritise efforts to preserve the people’s wellbeing and efforts to fight Covid-19 during this special parliamentary session,” he said.
