Azmin Ali, who resigned as international trade and industry minister this morning, apologised for his shortcomings on the job.
The Bersatu leader said he did his best to address the economic hardship and preserve jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Although the economy is recovering, many have suffered during this ruthless global pandemic.
“My sincere apologies for any of my shortcomings. It has been an honour to serve you,” he tweeted this afternoon.
Azmin (above) had come under intense criticism following the emergence of factory clusters, which contributed to the surge of Covid-19 cases.
The former PKR deputy president was instrumental in last year's political coup known as the "Sheraton Move", which ended Pakatan Harapan's 22-month reign.
It also led to the formation of a new alliance called Perikatan Nasional headed by Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who was sworn in as prime minister on March 1, 2020.
Muhyiddin, who resigned this morning after losing majority support in the Dewan Rakyat, would serve as caretaker prime minister until a successor is found.
Wan Saiful praises 'statesman' Muhyiddin
In a related development, Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan praised Muhyiddin for relinquishing his post.
According to him, it proved that the former premier was a statesman who prioritised the interests of the nation and people.
From the start, he said Muhyiddin wanted political stability to enable the government to focus on battling Covid-19.
“Unfortunately for this country, there were some power-crazed individuals with personal interests who continued to ruin this stability,” he added.
Although he did not mention names, it was an obvious reference to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, former premier Najib Abdul Razak and those aligned to the pair.
Muhyiddin's position became untenable after Zahid, Najib and 13 other Umno lawmakers withdrew their support for him on the basis that his administration failed to contain the pandemic.
However, Muhyiddin hinted that it was due to him not being willing to interfere in some of their court cases.
Meanwhile, Wan Saiful said Muhyiddin and his government had laid the foundation with regard to dealing with Covid-19 and its repercussions on the economy.
He added that the next leader to take over the reins can expect to achieve success based on the efforts and groundwork prepared by Muhyiddin.
