Istana: Muhyiddin to serve as caretaker PM pending search for successor
Muhyiddin Yassin will serve as the caretaker prime minister until a successor is appointed, said the Istana Negara.

Muhyiddin Yassin will serve as the caretaker prime minister until a successor is appointed, said the Istana Negara.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong also expressed that he was not in favour of conducting fresh elections now due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a statement, Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said His Majesty expressed this after receiving a briefing from the Election Commission.
"Of the 613 state assembly constituencies in the country, 484 constituencies (79 percent) are in 'red zones'.
"Therefore, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong does not believe that holding fresh elections at this juncture are in the best interests of the safety and wellbeing of the people."
He said the king had accepted the Pagoh MP's resignation as prime minister but appointed him to serve as a caretaker until a new prime minister is named.
This was in accordance with Articles 40(2)a and 43(2)a which required that the prime minister be a sitting member of the Dewan Rakyat who was able to command the support from a majority of the MPs in Parliament.
"His Majesty was also informed that healthcare facilities in the country are in a worrying situation," said Fadil.
Fadil said the king also expressed the wish that the political chaos in the country would come to an end, and that priority should be the safety of the people and overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic.
The statement also confirmed the audience between the king and Muhyiddin, which began at 12.30pm and that Attorney-General Idrus Harun, chief secretary to the government Mohd Zuki Ali and Election Commission head Abdul Ghani Salleh were also present.
Fadil said the Agong also expressed his gratitude to Muhyiddin for his service during a challenging period that began on March 1, 2020.
