All Perak assemblypersons who attended the state legislative assembly on Monday will have to undergo self-quarantine after two people tested positive for Covid-19.
Perak Health, Science, Environmental and Green Technology exco Mohd Akmal Kamarudin said the assemblyperson, who is from the government, was confirmed positive after taking a Covid-19 RT-PCR test.
He said the individual was screened for Covid-19 after experiencing symptoms such as fever on Monday night.
“The assemblyperson tested positive using PCR test, and with that result, everyone who was involved in Monday’s state assembly has been ordered to undergo self-quarantine starting today for safety.
“The instructions were also issued to the speaker, the Dewan staff and all special officers to assemblypersons who were present at the Dewan Negeri,” Akmal said, as reported by Sinar Harian today.
In a statement later, Akmal said a cameraperson working at the opposition’s side of the assembly chambers had taken a rapid antigen test after losing the sense of taste. The result was positive.
He said the Kinta district health office has requested the names of everyone who had entered the assembly chambers.
In addition, he said the health office wants a list of people who had met the assemblyperson or cameraperson, including those who had been in close distance with them, touched them, had a close conversation, or had been in high-risk situations where face masks are removed.
These close contacts will be classified into three risk categories. Everyone involved is required to self-quarantine while the assessment is being conducted.
High-risk individuals will be contacted by the health office to arrange a time and place for PCR testing.
Medium risk individuals are to quarantine themselves for at least for days from the date of the last contact and monitor for any symptoms.
“The incubation period of 72 hours for the virus from the last contact should be account for during this precautionary period,” he said.
Low-risk individuals may go about their normal activities but must wear face masks and face shields.
“They should review the priority of their activities and only conduct activities that do not carry risks,” he said.
Perak state opposition leader Abdul Aziz Bari also verified that all the assemblypersons have been instructed to quarantine themselves, but have not received further information about the matter.
“Yes, it is true (the quarantine), as far as I know, all (the assemblypersons), but I am not sure (how long) because I do not have further information yet,” he said.
The Perak legislative assembly took place over four days starting Aug 25 and ended on Aug 30.
