An article on Ketuanan Melayu , a racialist term coined by Malaysian politicians in recent years, has been featured on Wikipedia's main page today.

The article, which saw extensive updates in recent weeks, focused on the chronology of events that lead to the usage of the term in politics.

Ketuanan Melayu translates to 'Malay supremacy' or 'Malay dominance'.

The concept of Ketuanan Melayu is often referenced by politicians, especially among those from the influential Umno.

Brandishing a 'keris'

Receiving notable criticisms was current Umno Youth leader Hishammuddin Hussein, who brandished a keris at the 2004 Umno general assembly, exhorting Malays to defend the Ketuanan Melayu .

"During the 1990s Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad rejected this approach, with his Bangsa Malaysia policy emphasising a Malaysian instead of Malay identity for the state," said the article.

"During the 2000s, politicians began stressing Ketuanan Melayu again, and publicly chastised government ministers who questioned the social contract."
