The government and Pakatan Harapan have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) tomorrow (Sept 13), as well as to reveal the contents of the agreement to the public.
“Both sides agree to completely reveal the MOU to the public as a commitment to full transparency and accountability.
“In line with this spirit and commitment, both sides agreed to sign the MOU tomorrow at 5pm at the banquet hall in Parliament," read a joint statement from representatives of the government and Harapan, which was released today.
The signing tomorrow will be attended by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob as well as Harapan leaders, namely PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau.
All sides agreed that the deal is to restore political stability in the country for the sake of handling the Covid-19 pandemic as well as to revive the economy through bipartisanship.
“With this MOU, the focus and priority from both sides will be on creating a new political landscape through transformative initiatives and good governance reforms, specifically on strengthening the role of Parliament as an institution,” the joint statement read.
Early last month, Harapan top leaders – Anwar, Lim and Mohamad – along with Ismail Sabri had begun a negotiation process, initiated just days after the latter was sworn in as the country’s ninth prime minister, a job he secured with a slim majority in Parliament.
On Sept 10, Ismail Sabri’s cabinet said they had agreed to seven institutional reforms, including that the opposition should have a place in the National Recovery Council (NRC).
Harapan had responded to this saying they were inclined to accept the MOU offered by the prime minister in the name of public interest but that it is subject to “improvements to the draft which needs to be refined by both sides”.
The joint statement today was signed by government representatives, namely Home Affairs Minister Hamzah Zainudin, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Takiyuddin Hassan, de facto Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa and Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
The Pakatan Harapan representatives were PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution, Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub, DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke Siew Fook, DAP national deputy chairperson Gobind Singh Deo, PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin and PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil.
