Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan today defended Muhyiddin Yassin's appointment as the head of the powerful National Recovery Council (NRC).
"The truth is, the government made the right decision to choose Muhyiddin as the head of the NRC. We are seeing the results of Muhyiddin's plans (implemented when he was prime minister).
"We have enough vaccines. Muhyiddin ordered RM530 billion to be used for the rakyat... Businesses are being helped in an effort to revive the economy.
"There is nothing to worry about having Muhyiddin (lead the NRC). The results showed that Muhyiddin has succeeded," said Wan Saiful in a statement today.
Wan Saiful was responding to comments by DAP veteran lawmaker Lim Kit Siang, who today expressed "great reservations" over Muhyiddin's appointment.
Lim argued that during Muhyiddin's tenure as prime minister from March 1 last year to Aug 16 this year, there were 12,780 deaths attributed to Covid-19.
The number has since increased to 24,078 as of yesterday.
"If there is any one person who must assume responsibility for Malaysia becoming one of the worst-performing nations in the world in the war against the Covid-19 pandemic, that one person is Muhyiddin Yassin and nobody else.
"We are now told that under Muhyiddin's premiership, there had been under-reporting of the Covid-19 deaths and that there is a huge backlog of corpses in the government hospitals awaiting analysis and post-mortems," said Lim.
Wan Saiful said the only thing Malaysians ought to be worried about was DAP's "socialist" ideology.
"Lately, DAP is against government efforts to tighten rules for foreigners residing in Malaysia. (According to DAP, if the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) rules are tightened, there will be a 'mass exodus' of rich foreigners.
"The question is, which country does DAP think should have easy access to our country? What is their real agenda? This is what we should be worried about," said Wan Saiful.
He said Malaysia welcomed foreign investors but there have to be rules to ensure that the MM2H visa is not abused and that it (MM2H) achieve its objectives.
