PARLIAMENT | The government has confirmed that Lynas Rare Earths has been granted an extension to build a permanent disposal facility (PDF).
This was revealed by Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Dr Adham Baba in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The deadline was set to expire on Sept 3 this year, but the mining firm now has until March 2022 to build the facility.
Adham said Lynas had also submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) report and a radiological impact assessment (RIA) to regulators this month.
Previously, sources had told Malaysiakini that the extension to build the PDF had been granted by Adham’s predecessor Khairy Jamaluddin.
The sources claimed the firm sought to extend the deadline to March 2, 2023, when its licence expires but Khairy disagreed.
According to the source, the ministry approved the extension because there was a change for the PDF building site and constraints due to the movement control order (MCO).
Lynas initially planned to build a PDF in Bukit Ketam - a forest reserve about 35km from Kuantan, Pahang. This was rejected by the Department of Environment (DOE) in April.
Lynas then shifted its focus to a new site located in the Gebeng Industrial Estate, which sits next to the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP).
