The actual cost was revealed by Special Functions Minister Abdul Latiff Ahmad who said that the 22-year-old building was in dire need of repairs, including electrical and roof works.
"(Renovations) were approved on March 19 this year and works began on March 29. Completion is expected on Dec 7," said Abdul Latiff, adding that the project was ahead of schedule.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob told the Dewan Rakyat that Seri Perdana renovations were necessary because of safety and to uphold the country's image as the residence is being used to welcome foreign guests.
Ismail Sabri revealed this in Parliament in a reply to Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar, who questioned the rationale for renovating the prime minister's residence at a time when many are suffering due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Based on Abdul Latiff's explanations, the renovations were commissioned five months before Ismail Sabri took over as prime minister.
