Sindumin assemblyperson Yusof Yacob has officially announced his departure from his party Warisan to become an independent lawmaker who will support Sabah's ruling coalition.

This came after it was reported last week that he decided to quit Warisan as he felt that the party set up by former Sabah chief minister Shafie Apdal had lost its direction.

"It was reported in the media a few days ago that I quit Warisan, but it wasn't from my mouth. It was also reported that I had denied (the allegation), but that did not come from me either.

"Today, it is officially from my mouth and for the knowledge of Sabahans and Malaysians.

"I refer to the royal decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong while officiating the Dewan Rakyat as well as the message of the Sabah governor during the state legislative assembly on Sept 21, that leaders in Sabah should forge bipartisan cooperation," he told a press conference in Kota Kinabalu today.

He said in order to fight Covid-19, ease the suffering of the people and be loyal to the Agong and state governor, in his capacity as the Sindumin assemblyperson, he chose to cooperate with the prime minister and Sabah chief minister by supporting them.

'Decision is my own'

Yusof, who was also Warisan information chief, said he was not pressed to make the move and did so for the sake of development and political stability in Sabah.

"I made the decision on my own without being influenced nor pressured by anyone. I made up my mind after taking into consideration that I could work with government agencies to serve the people I represent.

"As such, I announce that I will become an independent assemblyperson who will support the (state and federal) governments and I will relinquish my membership and all positions in Warisan," he added.

Yusof joined Warisan in 2016 and contested in the 2018 general election under the party's ticket.

On Oct 3, Warisan denied that 15 of its state assemblypersons had left its fold and went on to support Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).

Yusof was the second Warisan assemblyperson to quit after the Sept 26 state election in September 2020. In February, Sebatik assemblyperson Hassan A Gani Pg Amir also left Warisan to be an independent lawmaker.
