Govt has money: Pak Lah
The government will not use money from the national oil company Petronas to prime-pump the economy, said Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today.
The government will not use money from the national oil company Petronas to prime-pump the economy, said Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today.
"True Petronas has money but we must be disciplined. We must know to differentiate between money belonging to Petronas and government's money," he said in his opening speech at the Umno general assembly this morning.
"If we start dipping our hands everywhere, we are violating trust and mismanaging funds. We would be managing our affairs without accountability," he said.
He added that the government had sufficient cash flow but he was aimed at reducing the budget deficit.
"Government has money. For the past three years, I have worked to reduce the deficit so that we have funds to spend in the Ninth Malaysia Plan. Due to our prudence, we have succeeded in bringing down the deficit."
Instant noodle success
On the performance of Bursa Malaysia, Abdullah said he can immediately boost the market by getting his ministers to agree to the listings of Petronas and Felda.
"On its own Petronas can inject RM400 billion into the market and instantly we can be one of the leading bourses in Asia.
"But we should not be rushing into achieving instant success by pawning our strategic national interest," he added in his 90-minute speech.
"Out efforts to attract investments and at the same time to invigorate our market should not follow the style of making instant noodles," he said to loud cheers from the delegates.
Show proof of graft
Abdullah also said that he remained steadfast in his battle against corruption.
"But I can't do this on my own. I ask each and every party member to help me to eradicate money politics in our party.
"We don't need leaders who are elected for their power to buy the support," he said.
He asked party members to provide him with proof of money politics and not just make accusations.
