PAS 'slightly disappointed' in Malacca clash with Umno

Tuan Ibrahim said while there were lengthy discussions with an initial positive outcome, BN eventually decided to contest in all 28 seats, including seven out of eight PAS seats allocated under Perikatan Nasional.
"For us (PAS) there is a slight disappointment because the efforts to cooperate have failed at the end, but (maybe) Malacca is not our (Muafakat Nasional)'s field," Tuan Ibrahim told reporters when met at the 67th annual PAS Muktamar in Kuala Terengganu, earlier today.
PAS and Umno, through Muafakat, had in the past cooperated in a series of by-elections held since the last 14th general elections, making way for either party to go up against Harapan and other candidates.
Since then, Umno has severed ties with Bersatu while remaining in the PN federal government, together with PAS that had attempted to maintain relations on both sides.
Earlier today, PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin announced that PAS has been allocated eight seats, of which seven were held by Umno incumbents.
The seven former Umno-held seats are Kuala Linggi, Taboh Naning, Durian Tunggal, Duyong, Serkam, Kelebang and Merlimau, while Bukit Katil was formerly won by Amanah.
Commenting further, Tuan Ibrahim described PAS' clash with Umno as a situation that must be faced.
"The truth is, in the beginning, we held discussions to prevent a clash, (see if) we can compromise on seat negotiations. But because Umno decided to contest in all seats (allocated to PAS), we were left with no choice.
"There was no room for compromise... If during the discussion there were seats conceded by Umno, maybe there would not be any clashes," said the Kubang Kerian MP.
Tuan Ibrahim also defended PAS' decision to contest with PN, arguing that the Muafakat pact was forged in a larger context of uniting the ummah, as opposed to a registered political entity.
