MALACCA POLLS | Perikatan Nasional's chief minister candidate will come from Bersatu, Muhyiddin Yassin confirmed with reporters today.
The former PM said the coalition has already agreed to a name, but declined to reveal further, saying that it is part of PN strategy to only announce it much later.
"We will announce it soon. For sure it will be before the polling day," he said during a press conference in Bemban, Malacca this evening.
"We already decided. And it is given that if Bersatu gets the greatest number of seats, and is given the trust by our partners including PAS, the chief minister will come from Bersatu.
"That much I can confirm."
Bersatu is contesting 15 out of the total 28 Malacca state legislative assembly seats, while PAS and Gerakan are contesting eight and five respectively.
Campaigning for the Malacca polls started on Nov 8. Malaccans will decide on Nov 20.
PN, which consists of Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, Star and SAPP, has been coy about announcing a name.
Bersatu vice-president Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen, who is also Malacca PN and Bersatu chief, is believed to be a front-runner.
Another possible candidate who has been floated is Bersatu’s Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, who is also contesting the state seat of Tanjung Bidara.
When asked if PN is ready to form a unity government should the election results show that no single coalition has enough numbers, Muhyiddin said he is not keen to speculate.
However, he expressed hope that voters would choose PN to form a government on its own.
"If they choose PN, then there won't be a hung government.
"But I do not know what the Malacca voters will decide. And I am not keen to speculate 'what if, what if'."
