SARAWAK POLLS | Sarawak DAP has indicated a willingness to “compromise” with fellow opposition party Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) in the upcoming state election.

This afternoon, state wing chief Chong Chieng Jen unveiled names for 18 of the 26 seats the party will be contesting in the Dec 18 polls.

He stopped shy of revealing the full line-up, including where he will be contesting, for apparent “strategic reasons”.

Of the unannounced eight seats, six are in Kuching, and two are in Sibu.

“Out of the eight, six are in the Kuching area namely Pending, Padungan, Kota Sentosa, Batu Kawah, Batu Kitang and Stakan. We did not announce these areas because of strategic reasons.

“And the other two areas that were not announced are Dudong and Bawang Assan in the Sibu area,” he said in a broadcasted press conference.

Dudong and Bawang Assan have PSB incumbents.

Chong said candidates for these areas would be made known once talks with PSB are finalised and once DAP’s opponents show their cards.

“Before this, there were negotiations with PSB, but I think it was not very successful. Nevertheless, DAP is willing to compromise and (we) still open our doors to final negotiations and final arrangements with PSB on the seats [...]

“This is an indication, a show of our sincerity that we should cooperate and work to fight against the GPS.

“As for the six areas in Kuching, this is because of strategic reasons. We will see who are the candidates that Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) will be fielding.

“We will adjust accordingly because in these areas, candidates can be interchanged, and seats can be swapped depending on our opponent,” he said.

The nomination day is in 10 days’ time on Dec 6.

Incumbent ruling coalition GPS, which includes SUPP, is set to announce all candidates for all 82 seats on Dec 4.
