PKR man backs merger with Amanah, says can fill vacuum after defections

PKR's Kota Anggerik assemblyperson Mohd Najwan Halimi has backed a suggestion for PKR and Amanah to merge into a single political party.

Najwan said the Amanah leaders can help fill the vacuum in PKR after its former deputy president Azmin Ali led several leaders to defect to Bersatu.

Najwan said the proposal should be deliberated by the leadership of both parties.

He did not elaborate on the nature of his desired merger but said it will involve Amanah "merging into" PKR.

PKR itself was a merger between Parti Keadilan Nasional and Parti Rakyat which resulted in a new party name, logo and constitution.

"It is public knowledge that both parties have the same political direction which is to push for reforms, uphold social justice and defend the welfare of the majority.

"The merger of Amanah into PKR will allow Amanah leaders and members to strengthen the PKR leadership structure as there is a vacuum at the central, state and division levels following the Sheraton Move last year," Najwan added.

The merger was previously proposed by political analyst Wong Chin Huat.

He said the merger would create a stronger party and help balance out DAP, which has a large number of seats in Harapan.

"This will work to dispel propaganda from parties that claim Harapan is dominated by the DAP," Wong had said.
