Malaysiakini bags best multimedia category at MPI media awards

The Malaysiakini team tonight has won first place for the Best Multimedia Journalism Category at the MPI-Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards 2020.
This is the second year in a row that the news portal has won the category.
The best multimedia award was won by a team of Malaysiakini journalists responsible for a series of interactive online reports namely: 'Track Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia', '63 years after Merdeka, Malaysian children attend camp to learn how to be friends' and 'Spend like an MP'.
The first report saw Malaysiakini offering its own Covid-19 tracker that allowed users to follow daily statistics and detailed information on the pandemic situation in Malaysia, including new clusters and deaths.
The second item was a special report that focused on young students from monoethnic or mono-religious schools who came together in a camp to learn how to be friends with their peers from other backgrounds.
'Spend like an MP' meanwhile was an interactive game based on real allocations provided to MPs, where users can play and have a glimpse of what a lawmaker can do with the budget they have.
The journalists involved in these reports were Lee Long Hui, Aidila Razak, Syariman Badrulzaman, Hazman Hazwan Sulaiman, Sean Ho, Thiagaraj Devaraj, Geraldine Tong, Kow Gah Chie, Nigel Aw and Wong Kai Hui.
They won a trophy, certificates and RM10,000. Lee received the award on behalf of the team from Housing and Local Government Ministry secretary-general Mohammad Mentek.
Based on the list of winners, the series of Malaysiakini multimedia reports were also shortlisted for the prestigious Kajai award.
The top Malaysian journalism award was, however, bagged by Malay daily Sinar Harian through their special report that exposed a meat cartel in the country.
Malaysiakini associate editor Martin Vengadesan, meanwhile, was shortlisted for the Best Columnist/Editor's Features Category with his articles titled 'White trash, George Floyd and the Malaysian equivalent', 'Upholding the rich tradition of betraying voters' and 'By-election goodies - part of the system's warped reality'.
The category was won by Utusan Malaysia editor Zulkifli Jalil (gold), Rajan David Christy from New Straits Times (silver) and Syah Rul Aswari Abdullah from Harian Metro (bronze).
Earlier today, Malaysiakini's Wong Kai Hui was named the winner of the prestigious Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award. Wong was chosen from almost 200 entrants from 55 countries.
