Former religious affairs minister Zulkifli Mohamad praised efforts by the Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya (GSPJ) to provide flood relief efforts, especially food aid.
After visiting the gurdwara on their invitation today, he said the operations there were very clean, efficient and professional.
"I am very touched by the tireless teamwork to express this extraordinary spirit to help others.
"I am very impressed with the allocation management system which involved people of various races and religions.
"Everything was very organised with documentation. This is very important to ensure integrity and professionalism," he said in a Facebook post.
Zulkifli (above), who is also the former Federal Territories mufti, gave contributions, on behalf of the Muslim Council of Elders Malaysia and the Al-Makrifah surau in Negeri Sembilan, to the gurdwara for them to prepare food for flood victims.
'Permissible for Muslims'
The GSPJ has caught public attention after it leapt into action and cooked up a storm to send out food aid to flood victims in the Klang Valley and in other states.
Their hard work, however, met with some critics who questioned whether Muslims were allowed to eat food prepared by the gurdwara.
In an apparent response to this, Zulkifli said this should not be an issue and cited the practice of vegetarianism among Sikhs.
In gurdwaras, only vegetarian food is prepared and served.
"The ruling for Muslims who eat food prepared by non-Muslims who are not 'people of the book' (Christians and Jews) is permissible as long as it does not include meat that they slaughtered," he said.
Zulkifli also said the Sikh concept of seva (selfless service) is not unlike the Muslim concept of ikhlas (performing something sincerely for God).
