Hamzah: 79 custodial deaths recorded between 2015 and Sept this year

Meanwhile, 17 cases have been handed over to deputy public prosecutors for further action.
Hamzah (above) said this in reply to a question from Sungai Buloh MP Sivarasa Rasiah, who had asked for the figures of custodial deaths between 2015 and September 2021, as well as what steps the government was taking to reduce such deaths.
The minister said they have prepared tighter standard operating procedures in handling detainees with medical issues, such as increased patrols in the lock-up at night as well as preparing treatment rooms and medical assistants.
Aside from that, Hamzah said his ministry is also in the process of improving the police lock-up management by creating a custodial medical unit (CMU) at five centralised lock-ups.
The pilot project for CMU will be implemented at the Bayan Baru centralised lock-up in Penang.
They are also in the process of installing CCTVs at all lock-ups in police stations and are expected to complete this by the end of 2021.
