UPDATED 4.28PM | The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) has been officially registered as a political party with the Registration of Societies (RoS) on Dec 23, said its pro-tem president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

He is only making the announcement now (one week later) due to the severe flooding situation in several states that was caused by the recent torrential downpour.

"Muda is a party that serves, and when we are a party that serves, our priority is to serve the people and the community," he said during a virtual press conference today.

"We don't want the flood crisis to be submerged by political news, namely the registration of Muda.

"That's why we took a stand and decided to focus (on the flood relief work),” he said.

He also added that Muda’s members are from all over the country and their mission is to ease the burden of the people affected by the floods.

On Dec 14, the High Court in Kuala Lumpur issued an order for the Home Ministry to register Muda as a political party within 14 days.

This was a result of Muda's third legal action challenging the government's decision not to register it.

The party previously alleged that Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin withheld permission to register Muda because its chief Syed Saddiq refused to support then prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

On Aug 12, Hamzah denied Muda’s appeal for registration.

The denial led the group to withdraw its second legal action which sought to compel the minister to decide on its appeal for registration after alleged delays in decision-making.

Its first legal challenge to get registered was rejected as the party had not gone through the Home Ministry's appeal process.

According to Syed Saddiq, who was youth and sports minister during the 22-month Pakatan Harapan administration, Muda has more than 60,000 members from various backgrounds and ages.

Muda to embark on a nationwide tour

Expelled from Bersatu in May 2020, he established Muda four months later and declined to join former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's new party, Pejuang.

Syed Saddiq said Muda will embark on a nationwide tour, together with political experts and party members, after the country recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic.

This tour would be to get the public views before formulating policies, including the party's policies and on government policies.

"It will not just be question-and-answer dialogue sessions where we go to the stalls, shops and coffee shops. We will have small and large scale sessions with the experts before we formulate an inclusive policy and new development policies," he said.

"So that Malaysia is eventually recognised as an advanced country and we need to ensure our education system is of world-class high quality.

"We need to ensure high-impact and quality investments are brought into Malaysia to create high-quality employment opportunities and ensure the distribution of wealth being carried out in a fair manner through a fair taxation system, which will not just enrich the elite and cronies," the Muar MP added.
